What Is a Contact Lens Exam?

A contact lens exam is a vision evaluation that includes corneal measurements, tear quality testing, and lens fitting. It is required before you can wear or renew a contact lens prescription.

This exam ensures your lenses match both your prescription and the shape of your eye for safety and comfort.

Why Contact Lens Exams Are Different from Glasses Exams

While a standard eye exam checks your vision and eye health, a contact lens exam includes:

  • Corneal curvature measurements
  • Tear film evaluation
  • Lens diameter and base curve selection
  • Trial lens fitting when appropriate

These steps help prevent dryness, irritation, and poor vision because of improper lens fit.

Who Needs a Contact Lens Exam?

You need a contact lens exam if you:

  • Are switching from glasses to contacts
  • Want to try contacts for the first time
  • Need to renew a contact lens prescription
  • Have experienced discomfort, dryness, or blurry vision while wearing lenses
  • Are interested in trying daily, monthly, or colored lenses

Even if you already have a glasses prescription, a contact lens exam is required before lenses can be ordered.
