Vision Care for Kids Starting at Age 9

We provide gentle, supportive eye exams for children. Our eye exams assess for early signs of vision changes, eyestrain, and other issues that can affect how kids learn, read, and feel at school or at home.

Located on Mermaid Avenue in Coney Island, we have been caring for families in Brooklyn for over 23 years, making the process simple and comfortable for both kids and parents.

What We Check During a Pediatric Eye Exam at Mermaid Optical

Children’s eyes are still developing, and regular eye exams help ensure those changes stay on track. During your child’s visit, we will assess:

  • Visual acuity (how clearly they see)
  • Eye alignment and movement
  • Focus and coordination between both eyes
  • Signs of strain from screens or reading
  • Near- and distance vision
  • Changes in their prescription (if they wear glasses or contacts)

We explain everything as we go, and we take the time to help your child feel comfortable and heard.

Why Regular Eye Exams Matter for Kids

Many children don’t know their vision is blurry, they assume what they see is normal. Left unaddressed, vision problems can affect:

  • Reading and learning
  • Attention and focus
  • Confidence in the classroom
  • Headaches or eye strain
  • Sports or physical coordination

Routine eye exams help detect these issues early, allowing your child to succeed with clear vision and healthy eyes.

Eye exams for children don’t have to feel intimidating. Our clinic creates a welcoming environment where kids feel comfortable and parents feel supported. We take time to explain what each test means, reassure children through every step, and answer parents’ questions clearly.

With eye care services available in English, Russsian and Creole, families across Brooklyn can feel confident knowing communication is clear and personalized to their needs.

Signs Your Child Might Need an Eye Exam

If you notice any of the following, it might be time to schedule a pediatric eye exam:

  • Squinting or covering one eye
  • Head tilting when reading
  • Frequent headaches or rubbing eyes
  • Holding books or screens very close
  • Complaints of blurry or double vision
  • Falling behind in reading or writing

Even without symptoms, we recommend an annual eye exam.

We Make the Process Kid-Friendly

We use age-appropriate tests, speak in simple language, and take breaks when needed. Our optometrists are experienced in working with children. We explain each step and include your child, helping them feel confident and at ease.

Our opticians will also help them find frames that fit well, feel good, and suit their style, so they want to wear their glasses.
